Jamaican Beef Patties
Have you been looking for a recipe for Jamaican beef patties for a while? Then you've come to the right place in YARDIES Foodblog.
Jamaican beef patties are a specialty from Jamaica. These savory dumplings are a popular street food and are often enjoyed as a snack or even as a main meal. Beef patties consist of a crispy to flaky crust that is filled with a spicy filling.
The filling for Jamaican beef patties traditionally consists of minced meat, often beef, seasoned with onions, garlic and a variety of Caribbean spices such as ginger, thyme, turmeric and Scotch bonnet pepper. These spices give the patties their characteristic aroma and pleasant spiciness. YARDIES Island Spice contains all the typical Jamaican spices.
The patty's shell is often made from a simple shortcrust pastry that is colored yellow with turmeric or food coloring to achieve an appealing golden color.
Jamaican beef patties are not difficult to make if you pay attention to a few things. For example, the fat content of the dough should always be at least 50% of the flour content. So if you make the dough with 200 g of flour, you should add 100 g of fat. Some of the fat is added to the dough in flakes when rolling it out, which gives it the flakiness that is traditionally found in Jamaican beef patties.

Ingredients for the dough
700 g flour
150 g margarine or shortening (vegetable)
200 g butter (makes a total of 350 g fat)
YARDIES Jamaican Curry
turmeric
1 tsp salt
approx. 500 ml ice water
Ingredients for the filling
700 g ground beef
2-4 onions
2 carrots
1 bunch of spring onions
6 garlic cloves
1 tbsp YARDIES Island Spice
1-2 tbsp Tropical Sun Brown Stew Marinade
2-4 tbsp soy sauce
250 ml meat or vegetable stock
1/2 cup panko or breadcrumbs
preparation
Knead all the ingredients for the dough (with half the butter) into a smooth dough and chill for about 1 hour. Place the other half of the butter in the freezer for 1 hour. Prepare the filling in the meantime.
Chop the vegetables into small pieces. Fry the minced meat in a pan and gradually add the vegetables. Season with YARDIES Island Spice, Tropical Sun Brown Stew Marinade and soy sauce. Pour in the meat stock and thicken with panko. Finally, lightly puree the filling with a hand blender. You should still be able to recognize parts of the filling.
Roll out the dough into a rectangle. Grate frozen butter into flakes using a 4-edge grater. This works best when it is frozen, so it should be kept in the freezer. Put some of the butter flakes on the dough, fold the dough in half and put more butter flakes on the dough. Continue in this way until the dough is folded into small pieces and the butter is used up.
Roll out the dough again and cut out circles of dough using a large cup, bowl or similar. Place some of the minced meat mixture on one half of the dough circle, fold it together and seal the ends with a fork.
Bake the patties in the oven at 200 degrees for about 20-25 minutes.
